Creating a safe space for students

Creating an open and safe environment is key to helping pupils feel supported in the digital world. When students know they can approach you as a trusted adult, they’re more likely to share concerns, ask questions, and seek guidance before problems escalate.

As an educator, fostering trust means listening without judgment, showing understanding, and responding calmly to any issues that arise. By making your classroom and school a space where pupils feel heard and valued, you empower them to make safer choices online, develop resilience, and navigate challenges confidently.

What should I do when a student comes to me with a concern?

When a pupil approaches you with an online safety issue, your response can make all the difference. First, listen carefully and stay calm, show that you take their concern seriously and that they can trust you. Avoid judgment or immediate assumptions, and let them explain the situation in their own words.

Next, follow your school’s safeguarding procedures. This may include recording the concern, informing your Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), and taking any immediate steps to protect the student if necessary. It’s important to act promptly but thoughtfully, ensuring the student feels supported throughout the process.
